Within Temptation have spent thirty years proving that symphonic metal can hit as hard as anything coming out of the underground, and Resist, their 2019 album, pushed further into industrial and electronic territory without losing the bombast that made them.

The Dutch outfit sit comfortably alongside Nightwish, Evanescence, and Epica in the gothic metal conversation, and their patches turn up on jackets next to Paradise Lost and Type O Negative with no awkwardness at all. The Resist artwork suits the taller format, and it's a good conversation starter for anyone who thinks they already know your taste.
