In 1996, The Cure handed the goth kids a curveball. Wild Mood Swings was sprawling, weird, brass-heavy in places, deeply uncommercial in others, and almost universally misread on arrival. Twenty-five years later it sounds exactly like what it always was, a band refusing to be pinned down, which is more punk than most punk records released that year.

The 13th, Mint Car, Strange Attraction, Gone!, these are songs that rewarded the faithful who stuck around after Disintegration and Wish. Now the album gets its first ever picture disc pressing, which is the format this kind of maximalist, visually obsessed record always deserved. A proper dark aesthetic artefact for the shelf, not just the turntable.
