Norway has a way of making grief sound enormous. Trail of Tears spent the better part of two decades doing exactly that, and Bloodstained Endurance, their 2009 swan song, is the sound of a band going out swinging, all Gothic metal grandeur and symphonic extremity stacked against each other until something gives.

This is the album that closed the chapter on one of the more underappreciated acts in the Norwegian dark metal lineage, a band who sat in that particular space between Tristania-era atmospheric sorrow and the harder symphonic metal of their contemporaries without ever quite fitting either box. There's real bite here alongside the orchestration, and the interplay between harsh and clean vocals does what the best acts in the genre do: makes the light parts feel genuinely earned.
