Before the labyrinthine concept albums and the decade-long release gaps, Tool made Undertow, and it is meaner and stranger than most people remember.

1993. Maynard James Keenan was still operating in a mode of pure controlled aggression, Adam Jones' guitar tone was tuned low and sitting on your chest, and tracks like "Prison Sex" and "Sober" were doing things with alternative metal and progressive structure that nobody else was even close to attempting. This is the record that built the cult, before the cult got too big to remember why it started. The 2017 pressing is the one to own, and at this point any pressing of Undertow on vinyl is worth picking up given how long Tool kept their catalogue off streaming entirely just to make a point.
