Released in 1992 when the Los Angeles underground was fracturing beautifully between grunge, metal, and something no one had words for yet, Opiate arrived sounding like none of it. Maynard was already preaching, Adam Jones was already painting in guitar tones most people hadn't heard before, and "Hush" was already making radio programmers uncomfortable. This is the document that started one of the most fiercely devoted relationships between a band and its audience in alternative music history.
