TOOL Aenima CD (1996)

In 1996, Tool released Aenima and essentially told the entire music industry to go read a book. Forty-six minutes of progressive, psychedelic, genuinely confrontational metal that still sounds like nothing else, almost thirty years later.

Named after the Jungian concept of the anima and Bill Hicks' idea of cleansing Los Angeles with a tidal wave, Aenima is not casual listening. It's the record that turned a generation of alternative and grunge kids into people who got very serious about time signatures and Maynard James Keenan's lyrical references. Forty Six & 2, H., Eulogy, the absurdist interlude Hooker with a Penis, and the eleven-minute closer Third Eye, a song that opens with a Bill Hicks sample and never really lets up. This CD is the original 1996 pressing, and it still hits.
