SUSPERIA Predominance Vinyl LP (2001)

Norway handed the world black metal and refused to apologise. By 2001, Susperia were doing something interesting with that inheritance, pulling in thrash and groove without losing the frost.

Predominance was the debut full-length from this Oslo outfit, whose lineup included ex-members of Dimmu Borgir and Old Man's Child. That pedigree meant something in those circles. The record has a directness to it that a lot of atmospheric black metal avoids, less fog-drenched cathedral, more boot through the door. It holds up as a document of a moment when the Norwegian scene was fracturing into interesting directions.
