There are heavy records, and then there is Black One, a 2005 album so dense with dread it has its own barometric pressure. Sunn O))) had already been pushing drone doom into genuinely uncomfortable territory, but this one arrived with black metal collaborators and a reputation, a track recorded inside a sensory deprivation environment, and a final mix that sounds like the room is slowly filling with something you can't see.

Malefic from Xasthur recorded his vocals sealed inside a coffin. That is not a metaphor or a promotional story. That happened, and you can hear it. Black One sits at the intersection of drone metal, dark ambient, and pure atmospheric horror in a way nothing before or since has quite replicated. This is a record that demands the right headspace, probably after midnight, definitely alone. It belongs in the collection of anyone serious about heavy music's outer edges.
