The Smashing Pumpkins didn't just write albums, they built entire cosmologies. Mellon Collie, the Machina era, the silver-and-black dreamscapes of Mark Ryden's sleeve art, all of it orbiting a very specific kind of celestial melancholy that somehow hit harder than anything coming out of the straight-up metal or punk scenes at the time.
