By 2019 Slipknot had nothing left to prove and absolutely zero interest in coasting. We Are Not Your Kind is the sound of a band going darker, weirder, and more deliberate than anyone expected from album six.

Where Iowa was a wall of pure aggression and All Hope Is Gone reached for arena metal, this one goes inward. There are moments of genuine unease here, tracks that sit in the industrial and alternative metal space in ways the early records never did, without ever losing the sheer weight that made them a phenomenon in the first place. Unsainted is a centrepiece, but the album earns its double LP runtime across every groove. If you wrote them off somewhere around the mid-2000s, this is the record that will make you feel bad about that.
