2004 was an interesting year to be a Slipknot fan. Vol. 3 landed and half the internet lost its mind because there were clean vocals and acoustic guitars and a song that could theoretically be played on the radio. The other half understood that a band doing something unexpected with nine members and a percussionist who once set himself on fire was probably the point.

Produced by Rick Rubin, The Subliminal Verses is where Slipknot proved they had more range than their jumpsuits suggested. Duality hit hard enough to convert the unconvinced, but it's tracks like Vermilion and Before I Forget that show a band pushing against their own established sound. Heavy, melodic, genuinely unsettling in the right moments, this is the record that separated the Slipknot fans from the Slipknot lifers. A cornerstone of the dark aesthetic that shaped a generation of heavy music.
