PINK FLOYD The Endless River CD (2014)

Every band has a final record. Pink Floyd's is a strange and quietly devastating one. The Endless River was built almost entirely from instrumental sessions recorded with Richard Wright in 1993, the year before The Division Bell, salvaged and assembled two decades later after Wright's death in 2008. It is, in the most literal sense, the sound of a band saying goodbye to itself.

Four sides of largely wordless ambient progressive rock, all drift and texture and Wright's keyboards doing what they always did best, which is make a room feel larger than it is. There's grief in it without being mournful, space without being empty. The one vocal track, Louder Than Words, lands like a full stop at the end of a very long sentence. Whether you think this is a proper Pink Floyd album or an elaborate coda, it exists, and it's worth your time.
