Leaner on solos and fatter on groove than their early work, World Demise landed at a weird moment when the genre's first wave was losing mainstream patience. Obituary didn't care then and the record doesn't care now. It sits in that deep, churning pocket that only Florida bands seemed to find, with Frank Watkins' bass as heavy as the riff itself and John Tardy delivering what might be his most unhinged vocal performance on record. This 2021 white vinyl 2LP repress gives it the room it deserves across two slabs of wax, and white pressing on a death metal record is always a slightly unhinged choice, which feels appropriate.
