Florida death metal doesn't get more blunt than Obituary. No concept albums, no orchestral interludes, no apologies. Just down-tuned, mid-paced, swamp-thick riffs and John Tardy howling like something dragged up from a sinkhole.

Their 2017 self-titled was a full-force return after a six-year gap, and it sounds exactly like Obituary deciding they had nothing to prove and everything to crush. The riffs hit like a humid Tampa night, slow and suffocating, with Trevor Peres locking into that unmistakable groove that made Slowly We Rot and Cause of Death genre touchstones. This pressing makes it worth owning twice: a custom Butterfly Effect variant with orange and metallic silver wings, hit with orange and black splatter. It's a legitimate art object that also happens to contain some of the best death metal of the decade.
