In Utero is Nirvana at their most confrontational and their most vulnerable, often in the same song. Albini's recording, done live to tape at Pachyderm Studio in 1993, captures a band that had more to say about discomfort and contradiction than the mainstream they'd been dragged into was prepared to hear. Scentless Apprentice goes harder than anything on Nevermind. Pennyroyal Tea is devastating. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter is named with the contempt it deserves. The fact that it still sold millions anyway is either a triumph or an irony, depending on your mood. On vinyl it sounds exactly as raw as it was always meant to.
