Trent Reznor went away for a while after The Downward Spiral and came back in 1999 with a double album that runs for nearly two hours and refuses to apologize for a single second of it. The critics were divided. Time was not.

The Fragile is the record that proved Nine Inch Nails was never just industrial rock with a good hook, it was something weirder and more ambitious than that. Across its sprawling runtime, Reznor builds and collapses entire sonic architectures, moving from the abrasive grind of 'Somewhat Damaged' to the genuinely devastating quiet of 'The Great Below' without losing the thread. It's the dark aesthetic equivalent of staring at the ceiling at 3am and somehow finding it cinematic. The fact that it's spread across three records now only adds to that sense of ritual, of committing to something.
