1996. Napalm Death had already invented grindcore, reinvented it, and were now busy dismantling it from the inside. Diatribes is the album that made the purists lose their minds, a groove-heavy, industrial-tinged pivot that had more in common with Godflesh and Fear Factory than Scum, and was better for it.

This is the sound of a band refusing to be a museum exhibit. Sheffield's finest were never interested in your nostalgia, and Diatribes is the evidence. Barney's vocals are as caustic as ever, but the rhythms drag and churn in new directions, locked in a kind of mechanical hatred that still sounds genuinely unsettling nearly three decades on. Essential for anyone who thinks death metal and industrial metal exist in separate rooms.
