1984. Metallica were 21 years old, furious, and making heavy metal sound like it had something to prove. Ride the Lightning is the album where they figured out that thrash could also be epic, that a riff could hit like a freight train and still give you chills.

The album artwork, all jagged lightning and electric chair energy, is pure dark aesthetic iconography at this point. It belongs in the same conversation as any patch you'd put on a vest with intention. Whether your jacket is held together by Slayer strips and borrowed safety pins or you're just starting to build, this one earns its place. Metallica didn't invent heavy metal, but on this record they rewired it.
