There are bands that influence other bands, and then there is Meshuggah, a Swedish extreme metal phenomenon that essentially broke mathematics over a guitar neck and handed the pieces to an entire generation of musicians who are still trying to figure out how the pieces fit together.

I is one of the most uncompromising things they ever committed to disc, originally released in 2004 as a single 21-minute track before being expanded for the 2014 reissue collected here. Where most metal operates in 4/4 and calls it a day, Meshuggah were already operating in rhythmic territory so complex that their own guitarist has reportedly lost track of where the one is during live performances. Djent as a genre basically traces its entire DNA back to this record, which means every band you've heard doing that chugging polyrhythmic thing owes a significant debt here. This digipak edition covers the full arc from the original release to the decade-later revisit.
