LIV KRISTINE Libertine CD Album (2012)

Long before atmospheric gothic metal had a Wikipedia category, Liv Kristine was already inside it, building it from the ground up as the voice of Theatre of Tragedy and later Leaves' Eyes.

Libertine, released in 2012, is her third solo record and the one where she leans fully into the pop rock side of her range without abandoning the darkness underneath. It is a strange and interesting document of an artist who helped define Scandinavian gothic metal deciding to do something quieter and more personal. The production is clean but the emotional weight is unmistakably hers. For anyone who followed her trajectory from the mid-nineties onwards, it hits differently than it would for a newcomer, and that context matters.
