New Old Songs is the 2001 remix album that handed tracks from Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish to producers including DJ Premier, Timbaland, and mix engineers who treated rap rock like a legitimate genre worth taking seriously. Which, at that commercial peak, it was. Strip out the cultural baggage and what's left is a record that sits at an interesting intersection of hip hop production and heavy alternative music, a collision that alternative fashion and streetwear culture has been circling back to for years. It's loud, it's deliberate, and it sounds exactly like 2001 smells. That's not an insult.
