In 2017 King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard released five albums. Polygondwanaland was the fourth, and they gave it away for free, releasing the masters into the public domain so anyone could press it. Hundreds of labels and DIY operations around the world did exactly that. It remains one of the stranger gestures in recent Australian music history.
The record itself more than justifies the mythology around it. Melbourne's most restless band pushed deep into progressive and psychedelic territory here, building long, interlocking compositions out of odd time signatures and guitar work that owes as much to krautrock and Canterbury prog as it does to anything coming out of the local alternative scene. It's heady, hypnotic stuff, the kind of album that rewards headphones and a dark room. A landmark in Australian alternative music, full stop.
