JESUS LIZARD, (The) Shot CD (1996)

David Yow stage-dived into an empty room more than once and somehow that's less surprising than the fact that Shot is still one of the most unhinged records in American noise rock.

By 1996, The Jesus Lizard had been terrorising venues and confusing A&R reps for the better part of a decade. Shot was their major label debut on Capitol, which sounds like a contradiction until you hear it and realise no amount of corporate money was going to sand down whatever was happening here. Yow's vocals lurch between a leer and a confession. Duane Denison's guitar has the coiled menace of someone who read a lot of theory and then decided to ignore all of it. Steve Albini recorded four of their albums, and while he didn't touch this one, his fingerprints are all over the DNA. For fans of the Chicago noise rock underground, post-hardcore that actually sounds dangerous, and music that makes you feel like something is about to go wrong.
