Before love metal was a genre, Ville Valo was already doing things his own way, writing heartagram-branded doom pop that somehow made Finnish goth acceptable in every suburb and underground venue simultaneously.

This poster captures Valo in the kind of brooding, architectural company he keeps best, a gargoyle perched somewhere between rock star and romantic ruin. HIM's run through the early 2000s rewired a lot of people's idea of what dark music could look like, and Valo's face became shorthand for the whole aesthetic, eyeliner, cigarettes, and paperback existentialism included. This belongs on the wall of anyone who still knows every word to Funeral of Hearts.
