HELVIS Reverence The Sacrifice (2002) CD

UK sludge metal has always had a particular relationship with misery, and Helvis understood that completely. Reverence The Sacrifice arrived in 2002 from a scene that had absorbed the slow-crush lessons of Saint Vitus and early Cathedral and pushed them somewhere heavier and more corroded.

Sludge and stoner metal this far into the British underground tends to feel less like sunshine and bong water and more like a grey sky that never quite breaks. Helvis worked in that tradition, grinding through tempos that make doom feel impatient. If your dark aesthetic runs toward the heavy end of the spectrum, toward the records that sit between metal and horror and sheer physical weight, this is the kind of thing that belongs in the collection alongside your Black Flag patches and your Earl of Vomit LPs.
