GODFLESH Selfless CD (1994)

By 1994 Justin Broadrick had already redefined what heavy could mean twice over, and Selfless was the sound of him dismantling the machine he built and rebuilding it from corroded parts.

Where Streetcleaner was pure concrete and hatred and Pure leaned into the mechanised grind, Selfless went somewhere darker and more hypnotic, slower, more suffocating, with industrial metal textures that felt genuinely threatening rather than just abrasive. Broadrick's guitar work here is some of the most oppressive in the Godflesh catalogue, locked into drum programming that hits like a hydraulic press on repeat. It's the kind of record that influenced an enormous amount of what came after it in industrial, post-metal, and doom adjacent spaces, often without those bands acknowledging the debt. Essential listening for anyone with a dark aesthetic and a tolerance for being crushed.
