Funeral are one of the genre's founding acts, forming in Oslo in the early nineties at the same moment funeral doom was quietly crystallising into something distinct and devastating. As The Light Does The Shadow is their 2008 full-length, and it moves exactly as you'd expect from a band whose name is also a mission statement. Long, slow, cathedral-sized compositions that sit somewhere between atmospheric black metal and the most desolate end of gothic doom. Think thick, mournful guitar work draped over arrangements that take their time because they have somewhere real to go. Not background music. Immersive, deliberate, heavy in the way only Scandinavian doom manages to be heavy.
