Before anyone had figured out how to market ska-punk to suburban kids, Fishbone were already doing something weirder, harder, and way more interesting, and nobody quite knew what to do with them.

This six-track debut EP from 1985 is where it started, a frantic collision of ska, funk, hardcore, and soul that sounded like nothing else on the LA scene at the time. Fishbone were Black kids playing punk shows, punk kids who could actually play, and the whole thing crackled with a kind of controlled chaos that Alternative Tentacles and similar labels were chasing but rarely caught. Decades later the influence is everywhere, from No Doubt to Sublime to half the ska-punk revival, but none of them had this much fire. This grey vinyl reissue is numbered, limited to 1000 copies, and it is not coming back around.
