EYEHATEGOD Self Titled CD (2014)

Some bands exist to make you feel worse, and they mean that as a gift. Eyehategod have been handing out that particular gift since the late eighties, and their 2014 self-titled record is them at their most corroded and confrontational.

Out of New Orleans, EHG built sludge metal into a legitimate art form by taking Black Sabbath's heaviness, dragging it through the swamp, and drenching it in feedback, misery, and noise. This album arrived after a long silence and lineup turbulence, and it sounds exactly like you'd want it to, slow, caustic, righteous in its suffering. It is not an easy listen, and that's entirely the point. If you're into the dark aesthetic of music that sounds like infrastructure collapsing, this is essential. A record that belongs in any serious collection of heavy, ugly, genuinely alternative music.
