Australian gothic metal doesn't get talked about enough, and Elegeion are exactly the kind of band that deserved a bigger world. Through The Eyes Of Regret, released in 2001, is a slow-burning document of melodic doom and gothic sorrow from a Melbourne act who understood that grief sounds best played at half-speed with clean vocals dissolving into distortion.

This is the kind of record that sits in the lineage of early Anathema and Paradise Lost without simply aping them. There's something distinctly Southern Hemisphere about its isolation, its weight. If you've ever stared at a grey Port Phillip Bay sky and felt absolutely nothing and everything simultaneously, Elegeion captured that. Australian made, and criminally underheard.
