By 2005 the nu-metal backlash was in full swing and half the bands who'd ridden that first wave were quietly pivoting to post-grunge. Disturbed did not pivot. They made Ten Thousand Fists.

Third album, heaviest record to that point, and the one where the band stopped being a genre act and started being Disturbed with a capital D. The title track is a stadium closer in the body of an album cut. Land of Confusion, their cover of the Genesis song, sounds nothing like Genesis and everything like itself, which is exactly the right call. If The Sickness is where they arrived, this is where they dug in. Essential for any dark alternative or heavy metal collection that takes itself seriously.
