By 2013, Darkthrone had long stopped caring what anyone thought, and The Underground Resistance is the sound of that freedom paying off completely.

Fenriz and Nocturno Culto had already spent years methodically working backward through metal history, but this one goes full traditional, speed metal, NWOBHM, Motorhead worship, all filtered through two Norwegians who clearly grew up on the same records you did. It is a deeply uncool record to love if you came to Darkthrone through Transilvanian Hunger and never moved on, and an absolutely essential one if you actually followed where they went. The riff on Valkyrie alone justifies the shelf space.
