1993 was a weird year for death metal purists. Carcass ditched the goregrind pathology lectures and made something that actually had riffs, melodies, and a production job you could hear. Half the scene called it a sellout. The other half called it a masterpiece. They were both right, and Heartwork has spent thirty years proving it.

This is the record that cracked the door open between death metal and melodic extremity, the blueprint that a thousand Scandinavian bands would spend the next decade chasing. Jeff Walker's sneering vocals, Bill Steer's leads that somehow manage to be both clinical and emotional, and a rhythm section locked in like surgical instruments. Surgical Steel gets the headlines but Heartwork built the operating theatre. A genuine landmark in extreme music, available on LP because some things just hit harder at 33rpm.
