CANDLEMASS - The Door to Doom VINYL

Doom metal has a lot of pretenders. Candlemass are not among them. The Swedes practically wrote the genre's rulebook in 1986 and have been enforcing it ever since, so when The Door to Doom arrived in 2019, the only real question was whether they'd still sound like a funeral procession being dragged through a cathedral. They do. Gloriously.

The record also marks the return of original vocalist Johan Längqvist, who hadn't sung on a Candlemass record since Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, the album that started all of this. His presence is felt immediately, all operatic weight and medieval dread. There's a guest appearance from Tony Iommi on the track Astorolus, The Great Octopus, which is either the most doom metal sentence ever written or proof that Candlemass simply exist on a different plane. Either way, this is essential dark aesthetic listening for anyone who takes their heavy music seriously.
