Volta opens with a war drum and a question mark, and it never quite resolves either. By 2007 Björk had already spent a decade making records that refused to belong anywhere, and Earth Intruders, the lead single, arrived like a distress signal from a future that was already here.

Produced with Timbaland in a collaboration that shouldn't work on paper and absolutely does in practice, the track locks fractured electronic beats to Björk's voice at its most elemental. It sits somewhere between dark electronic, avant-garde pop, and something that doesn't have a genre yet. If your record collection runs from industrial to experimental and you've always felt the space between them deserved more attention, this one belongs there.
