LaVey spent his pre-Church-of-Satan years as a circus lion tamer, a burlesque organist, and a police photographer. Satan Takes a Holiday sounds exactly like the record those jobs would produce, which is to say it sounds like absolutely nothing else you own.

Lounge music and cabaret played by a man who genuinely believed he was the living embodiment of the adversary, and meant it with complete sincerity and a great deal of showmanship. The organ work is theatrical, melodramatic, occasionally campy, always deliberate. Tracks like "Hymn to Satan" and "Strange Music" sit alongside old standard covers rendered deeply, specifically strange. This is the dark aesthetic equivalent of finding something at a garage sale that nobody else knows what to do with, except this one's limited to 500 copies on red vinyl and priced accordingly at $66.66, because of course it is.
