Starting out in Liverpool's early 90s death-doom scene alongside Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, Anathema gradually shed the heaviness and moved toward something more devastating, a kind of atmospheric gothic rock that hit harder than most metal ever could because it was so plainly, quietly devastating. The Eternity patch references one of their most significant early records, 1996, before the full transformation, when the doom was still there but the melody was already taking over. This is a patch for people who know the difference, who've sat with The Silent Enigma at 2am and understood it completely. Australian alternative and gothic scenes have always had a quiet affection for this era of UK doom, and this belongs in that conversation.
