ANATHEMA Judgement CD

1999 was a strange year to release an album that felt like a eulogy for a genre. Anathema had already been quietly dismantling their doom metal foundations for a few records, but Judgement is where they finally walked out the door entirely, and somehow made something more devastating than anything they'd done before.

This is the album that sits in the uncomfortable space between gothic metal and art rock, where the riffs are gone but the weight remains. Songs like Destiny and Deep pull from a well that's closer to Pink Floyd and later Talk Talk than anything on the Peaceville Three roster. It's melancholy that doesn't perform itself. Fans who came in through Paradise Lost's Icon era or Katatonia's mid-period drift will find something here that hits differently, quieter and harder at the same time.
