By 1996, Anathema had already shed the death-doom skin of Serenades and were becoming something harder to name, and Eternity is where that transformation gets uncomfortable in the best possible way.

This is the record where Liverpool's most restless band started pulling gothic metal toward something more atmospheric and emotionally exposed, with Vincent Cavanagh stepping fully into the vocal role and the guitars loosening their grip on pure heaviness in favour of something more haunted. It sits in the same bruised emotional territory as Katatonia's Brave Murder Day and Paradise Lost's Icon, but Eternity has its own unravelling quality that makes it essential listening for anyone who came to dark music through feeling rather than just volume. The UK gothic metal and doom scene of the mid-90s never sounded more like it was falling apart beautifully.
