AGONIST, (The) Prisoners CD (2012)

The Agonist's third record came out the same year half the melodic death metal world was deciding whether to chase radio play or keep the blast beats. They kept the blast beats.

Alissa White-Gluz was still fronting the band when Prisoners dropped, and her range across this record is the thing that always separated The Agonist from the melodeath pack. Clean vocals that actually carry weight, gutturals that mean business, riffs that owe as much to Arch Enemy as they do to metalcore without apologising for either influence. It's the kind of dark, aggressive alternative metal that translates just as well in a Melbourne warehouse show as it does through headphones at 2am.
