Oslo's 1349 had spent years as one of Norway's most visceral and uncompromising black metal acts, pure blast-beat ferocity in the tradition of Gorgoroth, with Frost behind the kit making sure of that. Then they made this record, a slow, ambient, ritualistic slab of darkness that traded speed for atmosphere and occult dread. Produced by Tom Gabriel Fischer of Celtic Frost, which tells you everything about the direction they were heading. It's not for the casual listener and it never pretended to be. Tracks like Horns and At the Gate of Transformation crawl rather than sprint, drenched in drone and dark noise. Dividing and alienating the audience is sometimes the most honest thing a band can do.
