Before riot grrrl had a name, Poly Styrene was already screaming about identity, consumerism, and the claustrophobia of being a mixed-race woman in late-70s Britain. X-Ray Spex were punk in the truest sense, not just sonically but intellectually, and Poly was the centre of it all, braces and day-glo and a voice that could strip paint.

This 1977 poster captures her at the moment of maximum impact, the year Oh Bondage Up Yours! dropped and changed what punk was allowed to be. It belongs on the wall of anyone who knows that the real alternative scene has always been about more than the music.
