The Ominous, their 2010 debut, pulls from the Norwegian extreme metal tradition while dragging thrash and death into the same pit. Samoth alongside Cosmo (Myrkskog) and Nils Fjellström (Dark Funeral) means this is effectively a supergroup operating without the ego, just focused, grinding metal with enough hooks to keep you coming back. It sits comfortably in the same world as the colder, more mechanical end of the alternative and metal underground, and it belongs in any serious collection of Norwegian extreme music.
