Before Sharon den Adel was filling arenas and soundtracking every symphonic metal playlist on the internet, Within Temptation were a Dutch doom-gothic act with a debut that sounded like it was recorded inside a cathedral that had been slowly sinking into a swamp. Restless.1997 is that beginning, raw and atmospheric in ways the later orchestral productions never quite recaptured.

This 2022 Record Store Day reissue is a single-sided 12" picture disc, limited edition and individually numbered, which means it exists to be both played and displayed. The gothic metal underground has a long memory, and for collectors who know their Within Temptation history, this is a document of where it all started, years before Mother Earth or The Silent Force made them a household name in the dark corners of every alternative record collection in Melbourne and beyond.
