WEEN The Pod CD (1991)
The Pod was recorded in 1991 almost entirely under the influence of Scotchgard fumes, and it sounds exactly like that, in the best possible way.
Dean and Gene Ween made this record on a four-track in a New Jersey basement with a chemical assist that the manufacturer definitely did not intend, and what came out was one of the most genuinely deranged pieces of alternative rock the nineties produced. It is lo-fi in the way that means the distortion is load-bearing, not decorative. It is funny in the way that makes you slightly uncomfortable. It sits in a tradition that includes the Butthole Surfers and Mr Bungle, artists who understood that genre is a suggestion and good taste is for people who are afraid. If your record collection has a corner reserved for things that resist easy explanation, The Pod belongs in it.
