This hardcover collects the sixteen-part origin story that finally answered the question the fandom had been sitting with for years, who is this guy, and why is he like this. It's a grimmer and more empathetic portrait than you might expect from someone who introduced himself by caving Glenn's skull in with a barbed wire baseball bat. Kirkman writes Negan's pre-apocalypse life with real weight, and it doesn't excuse anything so much as it makes the horror of him land harder. If you read the series, this is the piece that recontextualises the whole Saviors arc. If you didn't, it still works as a standalone horror character study.
