The Violent Femmes' 1983 debut is one of those records that sounds like it was recorded specifically for the weird kid who didn't fit anywhere, acoustic guitars slung like weapons, lyrics that oscillate between desperation and deadpan absurdity, the whole thing held together by sheer unhinged conviction. Folk punk before folk punk was a section in the record store, post-punk adjacent, proto-alternative, genuinely impossible to categorise.
