Before black metal had a name, three blokes from Newcastle were already doing it wrong in all the right ways. Venom's 1982 single In League with Satan didn't just influence the genre, it basically handed the blueprint to every corpse-painted teenager in Scandinavia who later burned something down.

The first wave doesn't get enough credit for how deranged and DIY it was. Venom weren't polished or technical, they were fast, loud, and absolutely committed to the bit in a way that still resonates forty-plus years on.
