Ulver have spent thirty years making sure no one can describe them in a single sentence. Starting as a Norwegian black metal trio who recorded Nattens Madrigal in a forest, they've since drifted through ambient, trip-hop, neo-classical, and full orchestral film scores, each album a deliberate middle finger to the audience who just got comfortable with the last one. ATGCLVLSSCAP, released in 2016, lands somewhere between glacial electronica and post-everything drift, named after a stretch of remote wilderness in Norway and sounding exactly like that.

This is Ulver at peak restlessness, building soundscapes that feel less like songs and more like weather systems passing through. It sits in that lineage of Scandinavian artists who treat genre as a starting point rather than a destination, sharing shelf space with Arcturus and In the Woods in the sense that all three came out of the Norwegian black metal underground and immediately started ignoring its rules.
