Ulver are one of the most genuinely strange bands to crawl out of the Norwegian black metal scene, which is saying something. They arrived in 1993 with raw, wolfish forest metal, then spent the next decade methodically dismantling everything you thought you knew about them, chasing noise, electronica, ambient, and art rock down whatever corridor felt most unsettling.

This 2003 compilation isn't a greatest hits package, it's a document of a band in full metamorphosis. The remixed and reworked tracks spanning their first decade serve as a kind of autopsy and resurrection at once, drawing a line from the primitive kvlt scrawl of Nattens Madrigal through to the cold digital shimmer of Perdition City. It's the kind of release that rewards the obsessive, and quietly baffles anyone who assumed black metal had to stay in its lane.
